Horizontal Screw Press Principle

The Integrated Horizontal Food Grade Spiral Screw Sludge Dewatering Machine employs a horizontally oriented spiral shaft with progressively decreasing pitch from the feed zone to the discharge end. Sludge enters through the top inlet, where gravity drainage occurs through the stationary ring gaps. As material travels horizontally toward the outlet, the reduced pitch volume generates mechanical compression up to 0.7 MPa. The differential motion between moving rings (driven by spiral friction) and fixed rings provides continuous self-cleaning, eliminating filter cloth blinding. This horizontal configuration allows for lower installation height and easier integration into existing food processing lines with limited vertical clearance.

Process Sequence

Material Flow Along Horizontal Axis

Feed & Gravity Zone
Flocculated sludge enters via DN100 flange. Free water drains through lower ring gaps. Solids concentration increases from 0.5-2% to 6-8% within first 800mm of screw length.

Progressive Compression
Spiral pitch reduces from 160mm to 70mm over 1400mm. Pressure gradually increases to 0.4 MPa. Bound water is forced out through ring stack gaps.

Final Pressure & Discharge
Adjustable cone creates terminal pressure of 0.6-0.7 MPa. Dewatered cake (22-30% DS) exits through 120mm outlet. Filtrate collected in lower pan.

Frequently Encountered Conditions & Remedies
Reduced throughput below 30 kg/h dry solids
Check feed sludge total solids: minimum requirement is 1.2 percent. If below, increase thickening time upstream or adjust polymer dosage. Inspect inlet for bridging; install small diameter agitator if necessary.
Cake dryness lower than 20 percent DS
Increase back-pressure by turning the end cone clockwise (maximum 4 full turns). Monitor motor current; do not exceed 110 percent of rated current. Verify that the compression zone rings are not worn beyond 0.3 mm clearance.
Excessive vibration during operation
Possible foreign object inside chamber or uneven ring stack. Stop machine immediately. Run reverse rotation for 10 seconds. Open inspection ports and remove any fibrous material wrapped around shaft.
High filtrate turbidity (visible solids)
Ring gaps may be worn or misaligned. Measure gap clearance; acceptable range is 0.2-0.4 mm. Replace ring segments if clearance exceeds 0.5 mm. Verify polymer mixing quality.
Routine Maintenance Schedule
Daily: Visual check of filtrate clarity and cake discharge consistency
Weekly: Lubricate drive chain (if present) with food-grade NLGI 2 grease
Monthly: Inspect mechanical seal for leakage; replace if >5 drops per minute
Quarterly: Measure ring stack clearance at three positions along shaft
Annually: Replace all ring segments and check spiral shaft straightness
Safety and Operational Limits
Maximum feed solids concentration: 8 percent (above this may cause bridging)
Minimum operating temperature: 4°C (sludge viscosity increases below this point)
Maximum back-pressure: 0.7 MPa (exceeding may damage ring stack)
Ambient temperature range: 0-45°C for electrical enclosure
Do not process sludge containing abrasive particles >1mm without upstream screening
