Operational Principle

The Food Grade Energy-Saving Press Dewatering Machine utilizes a variable-pitch spiral shaft enclosed within a set of moving and stationary rings. As the screw rotates, the decreasing volume between ring stacks generates progressive compression, forcing free water and bound water through the ring gaps. The slow rotational speed (3-6 RPM) avoids shear degradation of the sludge flocs, preserving food-grade process integrity. A self-cleaning differential motion prevents accumulation of fibrous or sticky materials, ensuring continuous operation without chemical cleaning agents. The filtrate exits through the lower casing while dewatered cake advances toward the discharge cone, where adjustable back-pressure regulates final dryness.

Inlet & Thickening Zone
Flocculated sludge enters through a 150mm flanged port. The initial spiral section features large pitch (180mm) to allow free water drainage through stationary rings. Gravity thickening raises solids concentration from 0.5-2 percent to 5-8 percent before compression.

Compression & Dewatering Chamber
Progressive pitch reduction to 65mm creates mechanical pressure up to 0.6 MPa. The differential rotation between moving rings (driven by spiral friction) and fixed rings provides continuous gap cleaning. Dewatered cake dryness typically reaches 20-28 percent DS.

Operational Diagnostics & Field Solutions
Cake discharge too wet (above 80 percent moisture)
Increase back-pressure cone pressure by turning the adjustment screw clockwise 1-2 full turns. Verify feed sludge concentration remains above 2 percent solids. Reduce hydraulic loading if torque exceeds 75 percent of rated value.
Filtrate contains suspended solids
Inspect ring stack for foreign objects. Run flushing cycle for 5 minutes at low speed (2 RPM). Check polymer mixing ratio; optimal range is 4-6 grams polymer per kilogram dry solids for food-grade sludges.
Motor current fluctuating or frequent overload
Remove any fibrous winding material from the spiral shaft through inspection ports. Ensure upstream screening (2mm or finer) is installed. Reduce feed rate temporarily until torque stabilizes below 90 percent.
Intermittent discharge or bridging at inlet
Check feed pump consistency; install a variable frequency drive on the feed pump to match press capacity. For sticky sludges, introduce 2-3 percent dilution water at the inlet to improve flow.
Maintenance & Safety Protocol
  • Disconnect power supply before opening any access panel or performing internal inspection.
  • Lubricate the main drive chain (if equipped) every 500 operating hours with food-grade grease.
  • Inspect mechanical seal every 3 months; replace if leakage exceeds 5 drops per minute.
  • Clean the ring stack with low-pressure water (below 0.3 MPa) to avoid ring deformation.
  • Verify torque limiter calibration annually; slip torque should be set to 110 percent of motor nameplate torque.
  • Do not operate without proper grounding; ground resistance must be less than 10 ohms.
  • Install emergency stop pull-cord along the entire length of the machine for accessible shutdown.
Startup & Shutdown Sequence
1. Pre-start: Turn on dilution water for 30 seconds to wet ring surfaces.
2. Start screw shaft idle for 15 seconds to verify rotation direction.
3. Begin sludge feed at 50 percent rated flow; ramp up to full capacity after 2 minutes.
4. During shutdown: Stop feed pump first, allow machine to run for 8 minutes to discharge remaining solids.
5. Flush with clean water for 3 minutes while spiral rotates.
6. Run dry for 2 minutes before stopping the drive motor completely.
